   Judge promotions-

Mike Frady- Promoted from trainee to Local Certified ZNA Judge

Congratulations to Mike for appointment to local certified judge status! Mike worked hard, put up with a lot of training and showed real skill for quickly seeing elements in sometimes very demanding judging conditions. Well done Mike!

Special congratulations to Richard Thomas for passing his exam and becoming our second standing assistant judge in America! Until the 1990s no one was allowed to hold this certification outside Japan. So this is quite an accomplishment! Dick is an example of a solid koi judge blessed with skill, knowledge and quite drive. A real asset to our program. Congrats Dick!

TOSAI EVALUATION SEMINAR PLANNED

On Saturday, April 14, 2012 we have a fun learning event planned. Mat McCann of Quality Koi/Nisei Koi Farm will be coming to Orlando to deliver koi acquired by some of our members on their recent trip to Japan. We are taking advantage of the opportunity to have a special educational session. Mat will teach about evaluating tosai for future development.

He will bring a small number of tosai as teaching examples. We will begin by having all attendees evaluate each tosai as to their beni, sumi, skin quality and other traits, both "on the day" and for future development. Participants will receive a form on which to mark their rankings. After individual evaluations have been completed (in a limited time period), we will ask our members who are judges to reach a consensus ranking among themselves "on the day".

We will see how we did compared to the consensus view of the judges as if the tosai were entered in a show. Then, the program will be turned over to Mat to point out the positives and negatives of the koi, and to provide his ranking "for the future". Mat plans to bring some tosai deemed not worthy of another year in the mud ("not for the future" tosai), and some he deems worthy of being kept in the mud another year. We will have an opportunity to learn about pigment development, skin quality and other traits of young koi.

The tosai Mat brings with him will be available for sale, but there would be just a few. (Mat is already bringing down 3 pre-sold ones.) The high-end imports being delivered will also be on display.

This special meeting is for both current and past members of ZNA Southern Koi Association and prospective members seriously interested in joining. It will be held at the home of Henry Culpepper in Orlando, beginning at 12:00 Noon. Directions will be provided to those who rsvp.

To plan properly for the meeting, rsvp's are required by April 10. Please contact Mike McMahon at: Michael.mcmahon@akerman.com.
